What is a Motherboard?

The motherboard is the largest piece of internal hardware in a PC. The motherboard is also known as the main board or system board. All the other internal components are attached to or integrated into the motherboard. When a computer is opened up the motherboard is the most visible component. It is the rectangular piece of hard plastic. The CPU is considered the"brain of the computer, then the motherboard can be known as the "nerves system".

The CPU, RAM, hard drive(s) and optical drives are plugged into the motherboard. A video card or a sound card can be added on a motherboard or built in.

How does the Motherboard work?

The motherboard works by sending impulses to components that are needed to complete an action. For example, For each action, an electrical impulse is sent to the motherboard. The motherboard determines what the impulse is, what is needed, and which component is needed to complete the function. It then sends that component a signal. The component then determines what is needed to happen and sends that information back to the motherboard. The motherboard then determines what action comes next and what other components are necessary to complete the task, sending them the appropriate impulse.
